World Championships ready to go

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:35 AM PST

The final two competitors for the Ladbrokes.com world darts championship were decided on Monday (November 29) when Alex Roy and Matt Padgett came through their qualifiers.

The duo will join 70 other players for the prestigious event, which takes place from December 16 to January 3 at London's Alexandra Palace.

Roy defeated Wayne Mardle 5-1 in their pivotal game during Monday's PDPA Qualifier in Derby. His success means he will make his 13th successive appearance at the World Championship.

Speaking after his success, a delighted Roy said: "It took a while to sink in at first but I'm absolutely delighted. This is the first time I've had to come through the qualifiers for the World Championship and it was really tough.

"I've known Wayne for a lot of years and it's a shame one of us had to go out. He gave me a good game but my doubles were great."

Padgett will be making his debut at the World Darts Championship after beating Mark Cox 5-3 in their key clash. The 28-year-old bowling alley mechanic is ranked 127th on the PDC Order of Merit and he admitted to being stunned with his achievement.

"It's the greatest moment of my life. I'm thrilled to bits with this, completed overwhelmed," he said.

"I wasn't really expecting to do so well in the qualifier because I'm still fairly new to the circuit and gaining experience on the PDC ProTour, but I can't wait to get on stage now."

Roy beat Padgett 5-1 in the final of the PDPA Qualifier, meaning he will go straight into the first round of the competition at Ally Pally. Padgett, meanwhile, will enter at the preliminary round stage.

Both players will have their sights set on progressing as far as possible in the tournament, which is expected to be dominated by the likes of Phil Taylor, James Wade, Raymond van Barneveld and Simon Whitlock.

SEC Championship Game, South Carolina vs. Alabama Prediction Pick 2010

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:37 PM PST

The Gamecocks will be ready. But is Auburn willing to spring an Upset?SEC Championship Game, South Carolina vs. Alabama Prediction Pick 2010

This is it. Two teams one step away from uncharted heights. South Carolina is on the doorstep of being the team to beat in the SEC East and a potential National Championship contender for 2011. Auburn? They need not worry about tomorrow, because a win on Saturday Night and they dance all the way to Glendale.

And the question here is simple. Does South Carolina have more than a punchers chance? Yes and no. If you’re confused, I’ll explain.

Teams with special receivers have been a problem for Auburn to stop all year. Julio Jones had a line of 10 catches for 199 yards and a score, A.J. Green went for 9 for 162 and 2 scores, Randall Cobb had 7 catches for 68 yards and a score to go with 47 yards and 2 scores on the ground. Obviously, none of these teams ended up w9inning, but they were the ones who gave Auburn three of their biggest scares.

And when you go back and remember that Alshon Jeffrey went of for 8 catches for 192 yards and 2 scores in South Carolina’s near miss? That right there is a definite point in the favor of the South Carolina upset. Auburn’s secondary is so beat up right now that even Connor Shaw may not be a deathblow in regards to that point either.

Next point? I know I was one to give up on South Carolina’s defense after they got gashed by young gun Tyler Bray and Arkansas’s inherent Petrinoness. But their front seven has been killing people in recent weeks.  At the very least, it killed any legitimate claim to having Steve Addazio as a major college offensive coordinator.

And when you take into account the propensity for South Carolina to generate a turnover, and/or a stop or three inside the 20? Suffice it to say that the Gamecocks may not get blown out of the water in regards to the offensive game.

Or will they? Lost amidst the throwing game beat down of the Auburn secondary is the fact that teams with good to great running backs never really got untracked. Marcus Lattimore is a great back, but lost in the afterglow of beating their rival in the face was the fact that Lattimore went for only 48 yards on 23 carries.

If you’re thinking about how that’s similar to a game in September where he went for 14 carries for 33 yards? You’re right. And if you remember that was against Auburn? You’re smart. Gold star for the day and whatnot.

All in all, I think the question comes down to whether or not you think South Carolina can get to 35-40 points. Auburn’s not a team that will let bad news roll downhill. And while they’re not a turnover generating machine? You’re either looking at a true freshman or a quarterback with a propensity for the turnover.

It’s going to be closer than the final wound indicate. But I don’t believe in a cinderella story here. Auburn 36, South Carolina 21.

Video: Leyton Orient and Scott McGleish help to flog the Nintendo DS

League One hits the big-time Apologies if this is old news to anyone, but I saw it for the first time last night so I’m guessing quite of few others might not have seen it yet. It is an advert for the Nintendo DS featuring Leyton Orient striker Scott McGleish. Now, Harry Redknapp, Jamie Redknapp, [...]

Video: Peter Crouch says c**t a bit too close to the TV microphone

Lanky striker gets sweary The problem with pitchside microphones is that you never know what they might pick up. Take, for instance, Peter Crouch during Tottenham’s victory over Liverpool on Sunday. Unable to bring a cross-field ball under the control of his famously good-touch-for-a-big-man, a frustrated Crouch indulged in a little industrial language as he [...]

A unique way of livening up a dull match We are not sure where or when this footage comes from (although looking at the advertising hoardings it seems to be Spain), but it is sure to brighten up this pretty grim day for you. With the action on the pitch not exactly enthralling, the very [...]

Video: John Motson gets aroused by Stoke City

Steady, Motty MOTD commentator John Motson seemed to particularly enjoy Stoke’s equaliser against Manchester City last weekend. The build-up to Matthew Etherington’s goal got Motty all flustered as Sanli Tuncay’s neat backheel flick left the winger with the chance to grab a point. All Motty could muster was: “Oh, it’s been turned on!” There is [...]

Video: Cristiano Ronaldo pushes Pep Guardiola during El Clasico

HANDBAGS! Childishness is an attribute you would more commonly associate with Cristiano Ronaldo rather than Pep Guardiola. But it was the Barcelona coach’s rather unnecessary refusal to hand the ball to the Real Madrid star which sparked this incident. Ronaldo dished out a pretty minor shove to Guardiola’s chest sparking a fine example of the [...]
