In this issue:
Greetings everyone, Loren Seagrave update A while back, Richie Mercado of the NACACTFCA.org wrote a two part summary from a Loren Seagrave presentation which can be found on the Blog here (part 1) and here (part 2). That presentation, along with Kevin O'Donnell, was published in the IAAF NSA in March 2009 which will be publically available on the IAAF website in March 2011. The IAAF NSA has a 2 year statute on published papers. With Loren's permission, I can present it to my readers but since the paper is copyrighted, please keep this for your personal use only. Do not post this on the Internet or Facebook. Here is the link: Neuro-Biomechanics of Maximum Velocity Sprinting (PDF) Moreover, anyone interested in obtaining his Speed Dynamics VHS series on drills (either NSTC or PAL formats) can contact him directly at SpeedDynamics@aol.com. They will soon be available on DVD. Masters' study update There have been series of studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, that examined the specific biomechanical and neuromuscular mechanisms responsible for the decline in sprint performance in Masters Athletics. One of the studies was discussed in my article Masters Age-Related Differences in 100m Sprint Performance. For those who are interested, the research have been summarized in Marko Korhonen's PhD dissertation available here: http://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-951-39-3613-6 or the 15.56 Mb PDF file available here: https://jyx.jyu.fi/dspace/bitstream/handle/123456789/20350/9789513936136.pdf?sequence=4 New York Mets' Jeff Cavaliere Jeff Cavaliere is a former strength and conditioning coach and physical therapist for the New York Mets. His personal resume includes players such as Carlos Delgado, Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez just to name a few. If you are interested in real world nutrition, he's going to share those secrets in a sports nutrition webinar Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 8:30pm EST (5:30pm EST) Professional athletes, including baseball players, are no different than track and field athletes striving for the highest level. Enjoy, Jimson Lee SpeedEndurance.com Happy Birthday! Interview with Jeremy Wariner 2010-01-31 12:03:00-05 Happy Birthday Jeremy! Hard to believe he's only 26 years old today with his impressive resume. Here is a good 6 minute interview (in 2 parts) from 400 meter specialist Jeremy Warnier. I wonder if this is a shameless plug for Adidas as he talks about: his training the secret to the 400 meters strength vs speed runners, [...] read more... Myth Busters – 800 meters in Rieti 2010-02-07 12:00:00-05 When you analyze the top men's 800 meters performances over the last 25 years, NINE were set in Rieti. Canada's Gary Reed PB for 800m is 1:43.93 from 2006, also set in Rieti. Rieti was also the venue for Asafa Powell's 9.74 100 meter WR set in 2007. If you are a half-miler, you'll certainly want to [...] read more... Dehydration and the Lesser Known Disgusting Tasting Cure 2010-02-08 12:00:00-05 Thanks to my Chiro and ART specialist Gerry Ramogida for sharing this tip. Pedialyte is an immediate relief for diarrhea and vomiting, and in some cases, hangovers. Pedialyte contains an appropriate, clinically proven balance of fluid and electrolytes. If it's good for babies and infants, then it must be good for us. (Who still likes Gerber Apple [...] read more... Another Interview with Jeremy Wariner 2010-02-14 12:00:00-05 This interview was held on March 2009. A couple of interesting points. John Smith's HSI group does their weight training at 9am, followed by the track work at 11am. By no means are the weights at maximal levels. Same with Jeremy's weight workouts. They are primarily used as a stimulus, in my opinion. Also, note his 1 [...] read more... Usain Bolt 2010 Opening 400 meters Video 2010-02-15 09:24:27-05 Usain Bolt opens his season running the 400m in 45.86 seconds. I give him credit for giving an "honest effort" for the first 200 or 300 meters. He splits 200m in 21.1 and 32.6 at 300m. His last 100m was run in 13.0. 21 flat is a very good split for elite 400 sprinters (check out splits from [...] read more... How to Choose Starting Blocks 2010-02-15 12:00:00-05 The best analogy for buying starting blocks is camping. You want to purchase the highest quality boots and tent money can buy. For everything else, you can go second rate, used, or thrift shops. For example, if you don't have the best sleeping bag, or the best water bottle, who cares? As long as it works, right? [...] read more... Torrin Lawrence on Mental Strength and 400 meters 2010-02-16 04:05:00-05 Torrin Lawrence is quickly becoming a household name in the elite 400 meter running scene. His recent 45.03 seconds was the third-fastest in collegiate history and the fastest time in the world this year. The indoor world record for 400m was set in 2005 by Kerron Clement's 44.57. He also ran 32.32 in the 300 [...] read more... LetsRun.com asks How is Bolt's 200m WR almost exactly twice his 100m WR? 2010-02-17 12:00:00-05 LRC Brain Teaser asks: How is Bolt's 200m WR almost exactly twice his 100m WR? Wejo and Rojo, you might think just doubling your 100m PB is the quick answer, but there's more behind the story. Usain Bolt's PB for the 100 and 200 meters is 9.58 and 19.19 respectively. In the 200 meters, you will never run [...] read more... Vertical Jump and Sprinting: Training the Posterior Chain 2010-02-24 12:00:00-05 One of the biggest fallacies in sprinting fast is the muscular legs and thighs in sprinters. I recall watching a meet and someone said "look at the size of Dwain Chambers' quads!" I simply remind them to look Blanka Vlasic legs with her tiny calves… thus the power is in the hips. Even the word "hips" is [...] read more... | ![]() ![]() ![]() Optimized for Mobile ![]() | |||||||||||||
