Aggies tally 16 wins at Arizona State Invitational

Posted: 28 Mar 2010 12:28 PM PDT

Tempe, Arizona – Texas A&M's day in the desert proved very impressive as they totaled 16 victories along with a baker's dozen of runner-up efforts during the Arizona State Invitational. In addition the Aggies came away with four meet records.

The only drawback on the successful day was not getting official times for the Aggie hurdle crew of Natasha Ruddock, Gabby Mayo and Vashti Thomas, who swept the first heat of the 100 hurdles. A timing glitch prevented marks from being produced for the race, so the heat was re-run later in the meet. The Aggie trio opted not to run the race again since they were involved in preparation for other events.

Melvin Echard supplied A&M with a pair of wins, taking the 110 hurdles in a slightly windy 14.19 seconds (2.1) and then leaping 51 feet, 1 inch (15.57) for the triple jump title.

Aggie frosh Sam Humphreys needed only one throw to win the javelin with another career best of 247 feet (75.28) as he moved to No. 3 on the A&M all-time list. Humphreys, already the collegiate leader this season, improved upon the 240-3 personal best he established last week.

Individual meet records were claimed by Tyron Stewart in the long jump, where his winning mark of 25-8 (7.82) places him No. 8 on the Aggie all-time list, and Curtis Mitchell in the 200, where he carried his seven-meet indoor winning streak over to the outdoor season with a 20.54 victory, the 10th best performer all-time at A&M.

Mitchell, who held the world leading mark of 20.38 indoors this season, equaled the current outdoor world leading mark also set by Australian Matt Davies back in February. Mitchell's previous personal best outdoors was 20.58.

While setting a career best and taking over the collegiate lead for 2010, Stewart bettered the previous meet record of 25-6 (7.77) set by Sean Robbins in 2004. Meanwhile, Mitchell ran faster than the meet record of 20.66 set by Wisconsin's Michael Bennett in 2000. Yes, that's the same Michael Bennett who is a Pro Bowl running back in the NFL.

The Aggies swept all the relay races and produced collegiate leading times in three of the events as they posted marks of 43.62 in the women's 4 x 100, a 39.35 in the men's 4 x 100, a 3:35.37 in the women's 4 x 400 and a 3:06.15 in the men's 4 x 400.

Meet records were attained by both of the women's relay efforts as the sprint relay bettered a 43.76 established by USC in 2000 and the mile relay took down a 3:36.10 set by Arizona State in 2007.

The women's 4 x 100 reclaimed the world lead with a 43.62 from the foursome of Elizabeth Adeoti, Jeneba Tarmoh, Dominique Duncan and Gabby Mayo. The men's sprint relay ran with the crew of Tran Howell, Gerald Phiri, Demetrius Pinder and Curtis Mitchell.

In the meet ending 4 x 400 relay the A&M women won by 90 meters with a collegiate leading time of 3:35.37 with the running order of Sandy Wooten, Donique' Flemings, Andrea Sutherland and Jessica Beard. The men posted a 3:06.15 over Arizona State's 3:11.50 with the foursome of Tran Howell, Tabarie Henry, Bryan Miller and Demetrius Pinder.

The Aggies added runner-up efforts in the women's 4 x 100 and men's 4 x 400. A sprint relay crew of Vashti Thomas, Tiffany Peters, Sasha-Kay Matthias and Ashika Charan posted a 45.71 second place time. In the 4 x 400, the squad of Joey Roberts, Kyle Dykhuizen, Ashton Young and Michael Preble turned in an impressive 3:08.82 over an unattached team who ran 3:10.90.

Sprint titles were swept by the Aggies with wins in the 100, 200 and 400. Jeneba Tarmoh (11.26) and Gerald Phiri (10.38) won the 100 while Jessica Beard (23.31) and Mitchell took the 200s. Sutherland and Pinder each claimed the 400 meters with times of 53.72, sixth fastest ever at A&M, and 45.89, seventh fastest all-time.

A couple of those sprint wins included some company. Tarmoh, currently the U.S. and collegiate leader, lead a 1-2-4-5-8 finish in the 100 as Mayo (11.27), Ashika Charan (11.86), Sasha-Kay Matthias (11.95) and Adoeti (12.09) followed. In the 200 Beard paced a 1-2-5-7-8 A&M effort with Duncan (23.63), Charan (24.12), Chandrell Stephens (24.30) and Vashti Thomas (24.45) following.

In the men's 200 Mitchell guided a 1-2-4-8-9 Aggie finish. Phiri finished second (20.91) while Howell placed fourth (21.18) with Trinity Otto (21.64) and C.J. Jones (21.70) taking the last two spots. Jones also finished third in the 100 with a 10.69.

Pinder, who lowered his outdoor best from a 47.34, led a 1-2-3-4-6 dominance of the 400. Henry placed second in 46.19 as Miller finished third in 46.49. Kyle Dykhuizen was fourth (47.49) and Ashton Young sixth (48.37).

The Aggie women swept the javelin with Laura Asimakis producing the top mark of 165-5 (50.43). Emalie Humphreys followed with a 163-8 (49.88) and Hillary Pustka placed third at 159-5 (48.60). Asimakis also added a third place in the pole vault, clearing 12-2 (3.71).

An impressive showing in the 800 nearly nabbed another A&M victory. Oscar Ramirez led in the latter half of the race, but was overtaken by Notre Dame's Jack Howard (1:49.52) as well as teammate Joey Roberts (1:49.54) in a blanket finish that left Ramirez in third (1:49.55). Roberts and Ramirez each set a career best and became the No. 4 and No. 5 performers on the Aggie all-time list.

Runner-up finishes for Texas A&M also included Donique' Flemings running 59.47 in the 400 hurdles and Brett Bennett clearing 16-8.75 (5.10) in the pole vault.

Tiffany Peters placed third in the triple jump (39-4.5). Finishing fourth were Seth Mabry in the 400 hurdles (52.67), Cameron Alexander in the high jump (6-8.75) and Colton Sandman in the pole vault (16-4.75).

On Friday the Aggies had a pair of hammer throwers each record a career best. Deidre Tarver tossed the hammer 176-10 (53.91) for fourth place among 22 throwers, improving her previous best by two feet. Cole Knuth improved three feet to 176-9 (53.87) as he finished 14th among 32 throwers in the men's field.

Tarver improved her standing as the No. 2 thrower on the A&M all-time list while Knuth did the same in his No. 3 position on the men's all-time list.
