Shark Hanlon – Profile

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 09:54 AM PDT

Meteoric is one word that you could use to describe the short upward journey through the training ranks for trainer Shark Hanlon. He only joined the licensed ranks in 2007 but has already experienced big winners especially with Kerry National winner Alpha Beat who scored at the Listowel Festival and is now firmly on course for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree next April.

Hanlon has already stated that it's his aim to target the big Festivals and his ultimate aim is to be capable of having winners at places like Cheltenham and Aintree as well as the "home" Festivals in Ireland. He certainly has the ammunition to be able target those sorts of meetings especially with the likes of Hidden Cyclone and Luska Lad soon to start out on their chasing careers and recent Cheltenham bumper winner augmenting those two then hopes are high that their Festival breakthrough comes soon. Those following the racing betting should remember this.

With 50 horses in training, last year's total of 24 winners looks a banker to be bettered and despite a very solid and loyal band of owners providing some quality horses, it won't be surprising to see Ireland's two biggest owners – JP McManus and Michael O'Leary – cottoning on to the potential of the stable very shortly.

The undoubted class horse in the stable is Hidden Cyclone, he's won six out of seven for the stable and the plan is to go chasing around Christmas, but he won't have a busy season and the plan is to aim him ultimately at the Gold Cup in 2013. One of the horses in the Hanlon yard that looks a sure-fire winner for the future is Grey Hession, he's only had one outing so far at Galway where he finished third in a bumper, but that form is working out well and he looks like he could well be worth taking at look at in the Leopardstown bumper ay Christmas and ultimately he may be a Cheltenham Festival bumper contender. People who bet on racing should bear this in mind.

One horse who is with the stable after doing the rounds is Cranky Corner and he looks as though he'll start off over hurdles before returning to fences in mid-November. Of all the up and coming yards in Ireland this is the one that we would pay the closest attention to.

Colin Tizzard – Profile

Apart from the really big National Hunt yards many of the smaller or dare we say it second division yards in terms of strength at least tend to have just the one outstanding horse that rather overshadows the rest of the stable.

That is very much the case with the Tizzard stable and Cue Card, who despite not quite capping off his season in the manner that he was expected to with a win in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham still looks an exciting prospect over fences judging by his recent debut at Chepstow. But beyond Cue Card there is much more depth to the Tizzard stable strength and some other familiar names head a cast of bright young talent that is set to be sent out from the Dorset yard this winter. Those who bet on racing should remember this.

Hell's Bay and Hey Big Spender along with Cue Card are the more established talents, but we can also highlight some of the darker horses like Xaarcet and Handy Andy. Hell's Bay had to miss the Cheltenham Festival last season when he was favourite for the Jewson, but he's back in training now and he looks sure to return to the track before Christmas. This strong travelling chaser looks sure to pick up more victories in the right grade and his defeat of Medermit last season was a top-class piece of form. Hey Big Spender looks sure to be a flag bearer for the yard in big handicaps and whilst Tizzard has a doubt about him getting extreme distances he is likely to be entered in the Racing Post Chase and the Welsh National – he could still be improving and not yet at his peak, certainly an interesting horse to watch. People betting on racing should bear this in mind.

Of the darker talents, the darkest in the Tizzard yard is possibly Xaarcet, and although this four-year old Xaar gelding is unraced, he is rated highly in the yard and granted some give in the ground he is one to look out for. Handy Andy is better known but still has some untapped potential after travelling very well in the Sefton at Aintree he was eventually pulled up after suffering an injury. Now right again he looks a lovely prospect for chases this year at around 2M 4F.While Cue Card will get most of the focus inevitably from this yard, don't underestimate the rest of the 60 strong yard which has more depth and promise than most observers think.

Free-falling Red Wings axe Nyquist

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 07:41 AM PDT

Detroit Red Wings have parted company with Gustav Nyquist as they attempt to find a solution to their poor form.

The 2007-08 Stanley Cup champions extended their winless sequence to six games on Thursday when they lost 4-1 to the Calgary Flames, and their season is in grave danger of imploding.

Nyquist appears to have been the first casualty of the Red Wings' desperate run, the 22-year-old Swedish forward being reassigned to the club's AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids. His only appearance for Detroit came in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild, during which he failed to have a shot on goal. The best hockey betting indicates they will continue to struggle.

"It's not that he didn't play well," said Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We took so many penalties that everybody's ice time was fairly limited. With him, we just thought in the situation we're going through, we'd rather bring him when things are rolling."

During Detroit's winless streak, they have found the net just six times and, against Calgary, Pavel Datsyuk had only two shots on goal during almost 20 minutes on the ice while Henrik Zetterberg managed just one shot in 19 minutes, 17 seconds.

Detroit are currently third in the NHL Western Central standings despite winning their first five games of the season, but are already towards the foot of the Conference.

The turning point in their season appears to have been the 7-1 thrashing they suffered at the hands of the Washington Capitals which marked the start of their current winless run.

Emma Lavelle – Profile

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 09:47 AM PDT

The Emma Lavelle stable always looks to have a very solid profile surrounding it, and that has been backed up by the numbers over the past few seasons with her stable consistently delivering 28-30 winners per season at a 15 per cent strike rate. Those sorts of numbers have cemented Lavelle in the upper echelons of the countries jumping trainers.

The yard now boasts a stable strength of 66 for the season with the emphasis very much on youth – the average age of the horses is just five. Lavelle has plenty of ambition this year to improve on those seasonal totals and despite missing stable stars like Court In Motion and Bouggler through injury she remains optimistic. The horse racing betting tips reflect this.

The class horse within the stable is without doubt Tocca Ferro, he's likely to be sidelined until the New Year and the plan is to have him ready for the Totesport Trophy in February. The trainer thinks he is well handicapped off a mark of 141 and doesn't want to run him before that target in order not to damage that mark. If he were to win easily in that race then the Champion Hurdle would very much become the aim for this season. One thing is for sure he won't be going chasing until next year and those more immediate targets have been taken on. Those who bet on racing should bear this in mind.

With there being so many young horses in the stable there is plenty of potential and it's hard to single out any one or two horses bit Penny Max and Camas Bridge both look full of promise for the future. Penny max has done well over the summer and he looks a good prospect to go novice chasing and Lavelle has a novice handicap chase for him at Stratford mapped out. Camas Bridge was certainly an eye-catcher on his only run so far in a bumper and he came back from that run a sick horse. Since then he's schooled really well at home and is very much one to look out for when he runs in novice hurdles over 2M4F.The stable profile has been consistent over the past few years, with this amount of talent at her disposal it's easy to see Emma Lavelle improving on those numbers this National Hunt season.
