Rees focused on world title

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:46 AM PDT

GavinRees has made it clear he is fully focused on winning a second world titlefollowing an impressive second defence of his European lightweight belt in Paris.

TheWelshman travelled to the French capital to take on Anthony Mezaache to defendhis belt, claiming an impressive victory and gaining plenty of plaudits as aresult. Despite being the away fighter and having the boxing odds against him Rees never looked in any real danger, producing one of the most complete performances of his career to take hisrecord to 36-1-1.

Reescould now be set for another chance at world honours, with a potential boutagainst WBO champion Ricky Burns being mentioned in what would be an intriguingall-British encounter. The decision on who the 31-year old faces next will comedown to promoter Eddie Hearn, who is certainly one of the best in the businessat getting the fights the public want.

Rees, meanwhile, was just pleased with how he performed against a tough Mezaache, admitting he now wanted to step back up to world level.

"I mixed my tacticsup, fighting nice on the outside and catching him with some big right hands."

"I'd worked on thegym more with the boxing, he was a good opponent but I won every round."

"I always seem to digin when the going gets tough and I want to be world champion again."

Sky send big guns to Romandie

Team Sky looks set to unleash star duo Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish on this month's Tour de Romandie despite previously indicating the two riders wouldn't team up until the Tour de France in the summer.

The two highest profile Team Sky riders are about to embark on a busy summer, one which includes not only the Tour de France but also the Olympic Games in London. Both riders have maintained the Tour remains the top priority despite the attraction of the Olympics, and Wiggins will be hoping to challenge Cadel Evans for this year's title at the sport's showpiece

Wiggins suffered a nightmare race last year, breaking his collarbone during the early stages and ruling himself out of the rest of the event with the injury. The 31-year old is back fully fit this year, though, and many have backed Wiggins to be a genuine title contender.

Cavendish will be go into the Tour as world sprint champion and defending green jersey winner, meaning he is the favourite in the cycling betting and will be looking to add to the 20 stage victories he has already collected in his stunning career so far.

Having the two Brits in the team has boosted Team Sky's reputation, as well as given them a great chance at establishing themselves a genuine force in the sport.

Rangers extend Penguins lead

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 05:37 AM PDT

New York Rangers have been in decent form in recent outings and their 3-2 win over Minnesota Wild on Tuesday has helped the side extend their lead to three points over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers have Marian Goborik, Brian Boyle and Ruslan Fedotenko to thank for the win, with the latter getting his name on the scoresheet with just over six minutes of the game remaining in Minnesota, against a resilient Wild outfit.

Henrik Lundqvist was once again a dominant presence in the Rangers goal and he was pleased with the win on the road, as New York – favourites in the ice hockey betting -  strengthened their position in the Eastern Conference.

He said: "It's in our hands still. So as long as we focus on our job and do the right things, then we'll be fine."
The Rangers will have their close neighbours the New York Islanders to thank for putting them in their current strong position, after they managed to beat Pittsburgh 5-3 to leave the standings at 103-100 in favour Lundquist and his team-mates.

As for Minnesota they will have been disappointed to have come so close to getting a result against the Rangers on their home patch only to leave with nothing.

The Wild's Kyle Brodziak admitted his side just lacked that bit of know how when it came to getting ahead in the encounter, which saw Minnesota come from behind twice.

He said: "It's just the little mental lapses we've got to get rid of.

"We have a jersey to represent, and we have fans that come out and support us and there's a lot of reasons to keep playing and keep working as hard as we can."

Moyes lauds Swans

Everton boss David Moyes has praised Saturday's opponents Swansea for sticking to their principles and continuing their attractive brand of football in their first season in the Premier League.

The Toffees travel to Wales to face Brendan Rodgers' side at the Liberty Stadium knowing that a win in Swansea will see them go above the league newcomers in the table.

The Welsh club were widely tipped to go straight back to the Championship after beating Reading in the play-off final in May but they have shocked the critics and now sit comfortably in eighth.

Much of their success has been down to what Moyes has described as a 'purists' style of football, with all their players looking comfortable on the ball and constantly looking for space off it.

This has seen them achieve famous victories against both Arsenal and Manchester City and a number of their previously little known players are now being looked at by some of the country's biggest clubs.

The Everton boss says he is expecting a tough game at the weekend and admits that his side will need to be patient when they line-up against Brendan Rodgers' men.

"Swansea are real purists in terms of what they want to try to do," said Moyes. "The style theyplay is great and I've admired what they have done.

"I'm looking forward to this, but it will be a tough game. We will have to make sure we try to stop the rhythm of their play, because if you don't, then they get into it.

"So you have to be aware that there will be lots of times in the game where you don't have the ball because of how well they do it" he added.

Immediately after that game the Toffees will have to prepare for a huge FA Cup quarter-final replay with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The winner will head to Wembley to face Liverpool – currently the favourites in the FA Cup final odds market.

The prospect of a Mersey derby at Wembley will surely act as a huge motivation for Moyes' players, though I'm sure the Scot will try and ensure they remain focused on Swansea before looking ahead to the game in the north-east.
