  • Best of November 2009

Greetings,

One of the highlights of my recent Bay Area trip was the keynote speech of General Colin L. Powell (ret).

I was attending a Tech conference, where ALL the videos were recorded and distributed along with the PowerPoint slides.

His keynote speech appeared on the website for about 3 days before it got yanked. I guess General Powell, who commends up to $200K appearance fee, might have asked the host to withdrawal the video.

However, all is not lost.

I did record the audio on my handy dandy Olympus DM-420 Digital Voice Recorder, and used some high tech software to clean up the original MP3 file onto a Windows WMA file. My podcast player thinks it's a Video WMA file which explains the funky looking display, but remember, it's content that matters. The opening introduction is Marc Benioff from Salesforce.com.

So unless General Powell gives me a call to remove the file (unlikely), I will leave the audio file available to my readers. Here is the link.

ERRATA: Last month I posted the wrong link to the Mike Boyle video on why you shouldn't do double leg squats. (I'd be chastised if I sent an immediate follow-up up email)  For those who are still interested, here is the link:

As always, here are the best articles for November 2009.

How NOT to do Sled Training
2009-10-29 07:56:00-04

In the YouTube video below, we have Veronica Campbell-Brown training with Tyson Gay.  Two world class athletes.  Fast forward to the 1:20 mark and you will see VCB doing a variety of 4 drills with a sled or harness. First, who am I to argue if these drills and exercise are crap, considering the success of [...]

Barefoot Running and the Vibram FiveFingers Sprint
2009-11-04 04:01:04-05

I'm standing in front of the Arch of Constantine which is next to the Coliseum in the heart of Rome. This historical monument was the finish line for the 1960 Rome Olympic marathon where Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia won the race barefoot. Did I mention barefoot? Running barefoot has its benefits, and today's running shoe with all [...]

Tom Tellez' 5 Phases of the 100m Sprint
2009-11-05 03:54:57-05

I mentioned the previous USATF SuperClinic in the article on Dwayne Miller, LaShawn Merrit's coach. Among the wealth of information provided at this clinic was a lecture and handout from Tom Tellez.  Tom Tellez requires no introduction… you can read the article Sprinting: A Biomechanical Approach Part 1 (Part 2 is here) for a detailed look [...]

Dwain Chambers, Ato Boldon and Box Jumping
2009-11-06 03:33:00-05

Several years ago in the days before YouTube, there was a viral video of Ato Boldon doing a 60 inch or 1.50m box jump (approximately).  Obviously, people confused this with the vertical jump or vertical leap test, but it is a good indication of explosiveness.  And bravery. I am a firm believer in plyometrics, and I [...]

What is DHEA? Benefits of DHEA Supplements (which is Banned in Track!)
2009-11-17 03:15:02-05

Thanks to Ken Stone for pointing this out to me. Masters [cycling] track racer Kenny Williams tested positive for the banned substance DHEA in a test taken at United States masters nationals in Colorado Springs.   In a letter first published at cycle-smart.com, Williams called the decision to take the drug a mistake and said that he [...]

Basil and Pesto - It's Better than you Think
2009-11-18 03:25:00-05

Now that I'm living in Italy, one of the most popular foods and spices is basil, otherwise know as Ocimum basilicum. Basil is the key ingredient in pesto – along with pie nuts, parmesan cheese and olive oil.  That's it.  It's my emergency meal when there's nothing in the house to eat.  When I'm STARVING, all [...]

The Icosathlon and Tetradecathlon
2009-11-24 16:00:00-05

What the heck is an Icosathlon? The icosathlon is simply a Double Decathlon, formerly known as the "Double Deca". When you think about it, Track and Field has 19 events without relays.  So what's the 20th event?  A 800 meter race walk which was held in the original Decathlon? A 150 meters straightaway? Nope, it's the 200m low hurdles [...]
